The grand Star Screen Awards were instituted in the year 1994. Since then, the chairman of The Express Group, Mr. Viveck Goenka initiates the award ceremonies every year. The winners are selected and nominated by a panel of esteemed judges from the film industry itself. Hence the Screen Awards attempts to stand out from other Indian film awards by presenting awards to the film fraternity by the film fraternity. For that year the event was sponsored by Nokia, hence, the Star Screen Awards 2009 were also known as the Nokia 15th Star Screen Awards.
